How the score works

For each topic we look at how much attention it is getting from several independent sources, then combine them into a single 0–100 heat score.

  • Public interest: daily English Wikipedia page views for the topic's article.
  • Tech discussion: the number of Hacker News stories mentioning the topic.
  • News coverage: the share of global online news mentioning the topic (GDELT), when available.

For every source, half the score comes from level (how much attention the topic gets compared with the other topics) and half from momentum (the last few days compared with its own 30-day baseline). A topic with flat attention scores 50 on momentum; doubling scores about 80; halving scores about 20. The heat score is the average across the sources that have data.

Trend is based on momentum alone: rising above 60, falling below 40, otherwise steady. The small chart shows attention relative to the topic's own 30-day average (1× = normal).

Wikipedia data arrives with a delay of about two days. The scores measure attention, not direction: a hot topic can move prices up, down, or not at all.
